The US Justice Department has entered the fray in a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, seeking to prevent the state's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to a US district court, challenges the redistricting plan championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme represents a brazen power grab that tramples on voting rights and mocks the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will withstand legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and they are likely to also lose in court," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge asserts that California's map improperly used racial considerations to significantly advantage Latino communities in violation of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," stated a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the major response by Democrats in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has spread across multiple states.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to flip just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the majority will shape the remaining period of the current administration, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its agenda or encounter opposition, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
