Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations impacting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that such operations become not financially viable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
