The anticipation about The Game Awards has been intense, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling photo of a desert monolith. The mystery has been revealed. The acclaimed developer is working on a completely new Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer that included memorable imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal descent into chaos.
A Different Direction
For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not on the cards right now.
Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This phrasing suggests that the team could be designing a real-time experience rather than another tactical title. For now, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it sparked the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, player agency, and complex character building—traits that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of specialized paths you can achieve if you're playing as a distinct build with a personal story.
The series is also notoriously permissive, letting players to experiment both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be completed in multiple ways, sometimes in surprising fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.
More to Come
It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, players can look forward to a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
